electrical + building permit

As of 2026-05-31, residential battery storage installations in San José require an electrical permit and a building permit and typically go through traditional plan review (not SolarAPP+ instant approval). Specific siting requirements apply: each battery unit must be mounted on at least two studs on an exterior wall or inside a garage; minimum 3-foot clearance from any gas line; minimum 3-foot clearance from any windows or doors. Battery stacking has not been allowed since July 1, 2021 — separate units must be sited individually. Verify current clearance, mounting, and code-compliance requirements with the Building Division and the installing contractor before signing a contract.
